Designed for storytellers and story lovers, this workshop will explore how personal stories can intersect with folktales. How do we activate stories to share? What engages the listener in our stories? The workshop focuses on developing stories for the oral storytelling tradition.

Word Space: Creating Dramatic Theatre with Shepsu Aakhu

Tuesday, July 18, 5:30-7:30pm
This workshop is an introduction to the process of creating dramatic theatre. Drawing on common storytelling elements used in film, television, graphic novels, and classic literature, the workshop will focus on developing the dramatist's practical and critical skills. Participants will have the opportunity to utilize aspects of character, conflict, and storytelling in a collaborative performance laboratory.

Word Space: Crafting Poetry with Roger Bonair Agard

Tuesday, July 25, 5:30-7:30pm
Examine the work of Natalie Diaz and Patrick Rosal, and consider perspectives on writing one's way back to sanity while negotiating liminal spaces designed to exclude. Participants will deconstruct poems, write their own, share their work, and get feedback for next steps.

South Side Circuit: Dance Workshops

South Side Circuit is a series of social dance mini-workshops. Each Thursday evening workshop will begin with a one-hour lesson accompanied by a live DJ. Participants are invited to practice their moves and purchase drinks at Café Logan’s Happy Hour following each class.

Learn the fundamentals of Chicago Stepping with legendary stepping master Dave Maxx. Following the lesson, put your urban dance skills into practice with curated sounds by DJ Dave Maze.

South Side Circuit: Salsa Experience with Blanca Aviles

Get ready for the dance floor with basic salsa steps for beginners. You will learn how to lead and/or follow as well as practice partner techniques and turn combinations.

South Side Circuit: Djembe Pound with Vicki Renata and DJ Rae Chardonnay

Juke and Pound to the sounds of House and Afro-beat in this afro diasporic fusion workshop led by Vicki Rinata. Pound is a drumming-inspired, fun and challenging cardio jam session that builds strength and stability. Following the workshop get grounded and centered with your favorite moves as you vibe to the Afro-fusion sounds of DJ Rae Chardonnay.


Think It, Make It, Screen It

This five-day intensive for beginning to intermediate students who have some experience with digital filmmaking aims to strengthen knowledge of the basics of videography, lighting, sound recording and editing, and allow students to focus on more advanced techniques.  Working through their observations, interests, and stories, students will develop their own personal filmmaking style. The course also emphasizess filmmaking as a cooperative medium, only possible through collaborative work. The course culminates in a public screening. Presented in partnership with Faithful Few.
