Altar Making with Kimberly Laude

While there are many different variations out there, a personal altar is essentially a sacred space in your home that serves as a “spiritual center” where you can focus on being your highest self.  Altars also consist of specific items meant to invite positive energy into your life. Participants in this workshop will accomplish the following:

  1. Learn the significance of the altar in other cultures.
  2. Discuss the differences and similarities in spiritual practices between cultural beliefs.
  3. Learn the essential elements of the altar.
  4. Create an altar that expresses gratitude, honor, and sacredness significant to the participant.

Kemetic Yoga with Frank Mitchell

“For me, there is a subtlety and regalness to this practice of yoga concentrated on the breath and developing and channeling the internal energy that has roots in all African systems of healing.”—Frank Mitchell
The philosophic principals of Kemetic Yoga place emphasis on Maat, the rejuvenation of the entire body and mind, and teaches you the skill with which to ease yourself into postures. Most importantly, Kemetic Yoga emphasizes control of Shu (“the breath”). The breath is the life force, and we use the breath to “flow” through the movements from one posture to the next.

Memories in the Body with Deeply Rooted

Emotional memory may be stored in many places in the body, not just the brain.  How do we access and engage with a memory—an incident, event, or experience that may live in the body?  In this interactive session, dancer, choreographer, and educator Kevin Iega Jeff explores the relationship between intuition, memory, and the body. Following a short dance performance, Iega will lead participants in movement exercises (experienced either sitting or standing) that conclude with a group sharing of the experience.

Social Dance Styles with Praize Productions

Logan Center's arts partner Praize Productions, Inc. (PPI) will host an immersive workshop on healing and achieving freedom through memory and the arts. This workshop allows individuals to call on their memory, from growing up to personal encounters, in order to create their own narratives and make connections on how our past translates into our future selves. PPI will use music, dance, and visual arts to curate this interactive workshop aimed at healing and freeing us from the memories of our past to unlock a more promising future. Enneressa "Reesie" Davis, Praize Productions' executive artistic director, leads this workshop.
