“As Luck Would Have It” with Artist Kerry James Marshall: Rosenberger Medalist Lecture

UChicago Arts is now accepting nominations for the 2023-24 Rosenberger Distinguished Visiting Artist award. Established in 1917 by Mr. and Mrs. Jesse L. Rosenberger, the Rosenberger Distinguished Visiting Artist award is designed to recognize transformative, influential, and innovative achievements in the arts. The award will bring an artist or ensemble to the University of Chicago’s campus where they will have an opportunity to meet with faculty, students, and staff and to present a public program that could include developing a project.

Submissions are due by Monday, April 17, 2023, with a decision by the Rosenberger Award Selection Committee to be announced by May 26, 2023, with the expectation the artist will be in residence at some point during the 2023-24 academic year.

Who May Apply

While individual faculty, students, and staff are welcome to nominate artists, they must identify a University department or presenting organization to endorse the nomination and take the lead in managing the residency and coordinating the awardee’s visit. Nominations that are supported by a number of University entities interested in jointly hosting the artist(s) are encouraged.

The Award

The University department / presenting entity that has nominated the artist will receive $25,000. This includes $15,000 for the artist’s stipend and $10,000 towards costs associated with the awardee’s visit and any associated presentation or project. We recognize and anticipate that departments can contribute funds that would increase the budgets for associated projects.

Selection Criteria

Demonstration of strong artistic impact through critical attention/reviews/previous honors or awards.
Demonstration of the artist’s contribution to the field of artistic practice.
Nature and extent of fit with an academic program and/or University entity.
Transformative impact upon the artist’s/artists’ field and/or their community.
Quality of the proposed public program/project as well as depth and range of University and public engagement.

The Selection Committee

The committee is appointed and chaired by the Senior Advisor to the Provost for Arts and consists of five members of the University of Chicago arts community representing a range of fields. Committee members rotate annually.

Nomination Process

What information is needed to nominate an individual?
You will be asked to submit a 600-word nomination statement. This statement should address the nominee’s influence, and enumerate their transformative impact and innovative achievements in the arts; detail an anticipated program for the awardee, including an account of the anticipated audience and participants; and set out a preliminary budget.

What happens after a nomination is submitted?
Applications will be reviewed by the Rosenberger Award committee. All nominators will be notified of the results once the decisions have been made and no later than May 26, 2023.
