ABSTRACT: Procedures and issues in my recent and some older music
A (very) selective survey of pieces, some very early (1950s), then especially the recent Resistance (2017), commissioned for performance with John Cage’s Concert for piano and orchestra (1958). Consideration of compositional procedures, historical contexts, political and performance aspects, and what experimental music might be now.
Christian Wolff (born 1934, Nice, France, lived mostly in U.S. since 1941) is a composer, teacher and sometimes performer. He studied piano with Greta Sultan and for a brief time, studied composition with John Cage. He went on to become part of a group that included Morton Feldman, David Tudor and Earle Brown. Later he was close to Frederic Rzewski and Cornelius Cardew. Since 1953 he has had an ongoing association with Merce Cunningham and his dance company. As improviser he has played with AMM, Christian Marclay, Takehisa Kosugi, Michael Pisaro, Keith Rowe, Steve Lacy, Ikue Mori, Eddie Prévost, Larry Polansky and Kui Dong. More than 230 of his compositions are published by C.F. Peters and many are recorded on some 70 CDs. A new book of writings and interviews, Occasional Pieces, appeared in 2017. Academically trained as a classicist, Wolff taught classics at Harvard until 1970. At Dartmouth from 1971-99, he taught music, comparative literature and classics.
