Physical | Digital applies the physical notion of conserved quantities to study transformations between physical and digital representations of basic, yet impactful, interactions. Together, Jonathan Rockford and Martin Scheeler explore transformations that collapse the intensity and duration of an expression—a hug, a secret, a gesture—into a digitally generated representation capable of being experienced instantaneously. Experimenting with a wide range of fabrication techniques from knitting to 3D printing used in combination with computer sensing and processing, this project examines what is lost and what remains as we move between the digital and physical, providing a new approach to understanding the simplest exchanges and interactions.
