Perhaps you’ve attended First Monday Jazz at the Arts Incubator, or had coffee and a biscuit for breakfast at the Currency Exchange Café before jumping on the CTA Green Line. Maybe you’ve visited the gallery on the corner of Prairie and Garfield Boulevard for an Artist-in-Residence exhibition or a teen theatre performance in the flex space. But how these spaces and cultural activities are related remains a mystery. Come for a tour of the Arts Block and speak directly with Arts + Public Life (APL) staff. On a walking tour of completed and activated spaces, APL staff will briefly discuss history and current context of the Washington Park neighborhood while offering details about the purpose and function of the properties along the 300 block of East Garfield Boulevard. Visitors will learn about its evolving space use, programmatic iteration, site-specific community engagement and arts + culture-led ethical redevelopment.
Tours are hosted the last Wednesday of every month, from 3:00–4:00pm, unless otherwise noted. Tours take approximately one hour. Tours are not scheduled on national or University of Chicago holidays. All tours meet at Currency Exchange Café at 305 E Garfield Blvd [map].
