Green Line Performing Arts Center, E & A Theatre

Arts + Public Life’s Green Line Performing Arts Center supports performance-based artistic practices. As a venue on Chicago’s South Side, Green Line Performing Arts Center builds upon Arts + Public Life’s existing partnerships with local artists and arts organizations, develops new creative relationships, and offers:

  • Performance related residencies for companies and directors;
  • Education: training, master classes, and workshops;
  • Theater, performance, and film-based programming;
  • Rehearsal and performance space.

Arts + Public Life offers two theater residency tracks at the Green Line Performing Arts Center. Track one is designed for companies-theatre ensembles and performance collectives. Track two is designed for directors, individuals with experience and strong desire for a career in theatre directing. The Theater Residency Program is intended to workshop and develop small scale productions. It is expected that participants of both residency tracks will provide: one workshop, master class or training program to the public free of charge rooted in their practice.

Track One: Theatre Company Residency

The Theatre Residency Program provides incubation space for two existing theatre companies with South Side Chicago roots–companies founded to have an active presence on Chicago’s South Side, or have predominantly South Side based members. Residency length is in four month terms. Both terms allow for a one week load-in and rehearsal and 2-4 week run. Space costs will be incurred at a significantly reduced rate in our ‘Introductory Year’ of operations.

Track Two: Director Residency (Pending)

The Director Residency provides a creative environment and contemplative space for the initial development of an idea, concept, and/or new play, musical, performance piece or devised work. The Director Residency is to support residents in furthering their careers in directing. Four residents per residency term will interface with leading Chicago theatre directors and industry professionals and provided a monthly stipend. This customizable nine month residency allows participants to develop works and realize overlooked original materials crafted by or about ALANNA (African, Latinx, Asian, Arab, Native American) communities.
