The Department of Art History provides a variety of programs for the study of the history and theory of art, fostering a forum for the exploration of visual arts in major epochs of European, Near Eastern, Asian, and American civilizations.

Our faculty's specialization ranges from the ancient world to modern cinema, and paths of inquiry are strongly interdisciplinary and traditional field boundaries are often traversed.

Lectures, seminars, and workshops emphasize diverse approaches to and analysis of the varied materials of visual cultures, through research and inquiry into specific objects, periods, and issues. Our students cultivate knowledge of salient works of art, of the structures within which they are produced and utilized, and of the ways visual environments generate, acquire, and transmit meaning.

Outside of the classroom, our faculty and students bring art historians, art critics, and artists to campus through lecture series, symposia, and workshops. Visit arthistory.uchicago.edu for more information.
